Captain Michael DeHart began his law
enforcement career in 1989 with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, and is
currently its longest serving member. Throughout
his career, he has served in many assignments including, Corrections, Patrol,
Criminal Investigations, Evidence Technician, Field Training Officer and
Coordinator, Narcotics Unit Commander, Operations Manager, Shift Commander, and
currently serves as the Patrol Division Commander. In that capacity, he oversees the operations
of the patrol function, including the School Resource Officers, Judicial
Services, Marine Patrol, Canine (K-9) and Reserve programs.
Captain DeHart grew up in Birmingham,
Alabama, and graduated from John Carroll Catholic High School. He furthered his education at
Birmingham-Southern College, the University of Alabama at Birmingham, earned an
Associate Degree in Criminal Justice from Wallace State Community College, and a
Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from Faulkner University. He is a graduate of the University of Alabama
Law Enforcement Training Academy, and was the President and Honor Student of
his academy class. He is a graduate of
Leadership Shelby County, and has completed the FBI’s Southeastern Law
Enforcement Executive Development Seminar (SLEEDS), as well as numerous
operational, supervisory and executive level training seminars.
In addition to his primary duties,
Captain DeHart is actively involved with the Shelby County Law Enforcement
Chaplains Association, and has served as the Chaplain Liaison Officer since
2004. A member of the International
Conference of Police Chaplains (ICPC) since 2004, he holds a Senior Liaison credential,
is a certified instructor, a member of the Liaison Committee, and chairs the
Instructor Development Committee. In
2014, he was honored with the Detective Stuart O. Nelson Liaison Award.
Captain DeHart counts among his many
blessings his wife and two children.
Away from work, he enjoys spending time outdoors, cooking, and spending
time with his family and church.
